James Green (1944-2016) was a historian and professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston, serving as a Professor of Labor Studies and later in the Department of History. He founded the Labor Studies Program (1981) and the Labor Resource Center (1995), and directed UMass Boston's graduate program in public history. His research focused on American labor movements, radical history, and social justice, culminating in influential books such as Death in the Haymarket and The Devil Is Here in These Hills.
His work included community collaborations with labor groups and historical preservation efforts, like securing National Landmark status for the Ludlow Massacre monument. He served as president of the Labor and Working Class History Association (2002-2004) and received the Sol Stetin Labor History Award. In 2015, Boston honored him with 'James Green Day.'
Green's legacy includes bridging academic research with public engagement through documentaries, educational programs, and advocacy for workers' rights.
