Professor James Gilbert is a Professor of Engineering at the University of Hull, specializing in offshore renewable energy systems, particularly offshore wind. He leads research on sensing, measurement, and control systems for energy systems, including robotics, medical rehabilitation, and energy harvesting. His roles include Research, Development, and Innovation lead for the Aura collaboration, Hull PI for the £7.6M EPSRC Prosperity Partnership in Offshore Wind, and lead on the EPSRC/NERC-funded CDT in Offshore Wind and the Environment.
His teaching focuses on advanced engineering topics such as Offshore Wind Energy (Level 7), Power Electronics, and Control Engineering. Current projects include optimizing composite manufacturing processes with fiber optic sensors and advancing offshore wind farm resource assessments. He has secured significant grants, including £702k for heterogeneous sensor arrays and £2.9M for the Offshore Wind Sustainability CDT.
Research interests emphasize monitoring offshore energy systems, turbine performance optimization, and operations/maintenance strategies. Recent work includes speech restoration via articulator movement sensing and digital twin technologies for wind turbine fault diagnosis. Collaborations involve Siemens Gamesa, Ørsted, and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult.
