James Gerhart is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Ohio University's College of Arts and Sciences, where he conducts research on psychosocial responses to chronic and life-threatening illnesses. His work integrates individual, family, and community-level factors in managing conditions such as chronic pain and cancer, and he employs a community systems approach to understand healthcare dynamics.
His research interests include:
- Trauma and resilience in serious illness
- Supportive care for chronic conditions
- Healthcare decision-making in critical care
- Resilience training for healthcare providers
- Mental health stigma and burnout among medical professionals
Dr. Gerhart has received pilot funding for studies involving surrogate decision-makers in critical care and is developing interventions to reduce posttraumatic stress in surrogates. His lab has worked on implementing ACCEPTS, an online resilience training program for palliative care professionals, and has explored abusive behaviors linked to caregiver burnout.
He teaches courses including PSY 4720: Human Stress and PSY 7740: Adult Psychotherapy, contributing to both undergraduate and graduate training in clinical psychology.
