James Garvey is the Chair of Liberal Arts at the College for Creative Studies and a Guest Lecturer in Design for Climate Action. He holds a BA in Philosophy from Wake Forest University, an MA from Michigan State University, and a PhD in Philosophy from University College London. His work bridges philosophy with societal issues, focusing on climate ethics, persuasion, and the moral dimensions of sustainability.
Garvey has served as Managing Director of The Royal Institute of Philosophy, expanding its outreach into schools, prisons, and community organizations. He is Editor-in-Chief of The Philosophers’ Magazine and frequently engages with media through BBC radio programs, book festivals, and opinion pieces for outlets like The Guardian and Times Literary Supplement.
His research explores how minds change, the ethics of climate action, and the intersection of creativity with societal challenges. Beyond academia, he critiques the misuse of neuroscience in marketing and analyzes pandemic politics through behavioral science. His writings, translated into ten languages, emphasize accessible philosophy for broad audiences.
