Eithne Quinn is a Professor of Cultural and Socio-Legal Studies at the University of Manchester, affiliated with the Department of English and American Studies. Her research focuses on race, inequalities, and legal systems, particularly examining the intersection of popular culture (e.g., rap music) and institutional racism in criminal justice. She leads projects like Prosecuting Rap, funded by AHRC/ESRC, and Tackling Racial Bias in the Judiciary, supported by a Simon Fellowship. Her work has been recognized with awards such as the BAAS Prize for Best Book (2020) and the Richard Wall Book Award (Finalist, 2020).
Key projects include analyzing the misuse of rap lyrics as evidence in UK courts and investigating racial bias in judicial proceedings. She has authored two influential books: Nuthin' but a G Thang: The Culture and Commerce of Gangsta Rap (2005) and A Piece of the Action: Race and Labor in Post-Civil Rights Hollywood (2019). Her research has garnered media attention in outlets like The Guardian, VICE, and Rolling Stone.
Eithne teaches courses on race and justice, American cultural studies, and hip-hop studies. She has supervised ten successful doctoral projects and is a member of the British Society of Criminology and other academic societies. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing inequality and creative industries.
