Simon Howard is an Assistant Professor of Psychological Sciences at the University of Miami's College of Arts and Sciences, directing the Psychology of Racism, Identity, Diversity, and Equity (PRIDE) Lab. His research focuses on the psychological mechanisms of racism, including vicarious racism's health impacts, religion's role in racial hierarchies, and racialized perceptual judgments in employment/legal contexts.
Research Interests: The PRIDE Lab's three core areas explore (1) consequences of indirect racism exposure, (2) religious influences on social stratification, and (3) racial perception in institutional decision-making. Current work addresses intersections between race, religion, and media representation with methodologies spanning experimental psychology, cognitive theory, and social observation.
Key Contributions: Howard's work reveals how White religious iconography increases racial bias, how rap music activates stereotype threat among Black men, and employment discrimination mechanisms tied to names, social media content, and ethnicity cues. His findings emphasize systemic inequities in criminal justice perceptions and hiring practices.
Labs/Teams: As PRIDE Lab director, he oversees research applying innovative methods to study racial bias in America, with particular focus on marginalized communities' experiences. The lab actively publishes in top journals like Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, Social Psychological and Personality Science, and Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology.
