Professor James Gao holds the Medway Chair of Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Greenwich's Faculty of Engineering and Science. He has been in this role since 2006 and previously served as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer at Cranfield University (1993–2006), where he also directed the MSc in CAD/CAM. His academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (1987–89) and post-doctoral research at Loughborough University of Technology (1989–93).
His research interests focus on advanced manufacturing technologies, mechanical engineering, and industrial processes, with a particular emphasis on CAD/CAM systems and engineering design methodologies. Professor Gao's work bridges academic research and practical applications in manufacturing innovation.
Prior roles and educational leadership highlight his expertise in shaping postgraduate programs and advancing technical education in engineering disciplines.
