Dr. James Fowler is a Research Fellow at the UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health and Affiliate Research Fellow in the School of Psychology within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at The University of Queensland. He holds a PhD in Public Health from UQ and coordinates the 'Blak and Proud' project developing culturally safe care models for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQIASGBB+ communities.
His research employs mixed methodologies and community-based participatory approaches, focusing on:
- LGBTQIA+ mental health and digital interventions
- Gender-affirming hormone therapy and healthcare access
- Sexual/reproductive health including PrEP and syphilis management
- Neurodivergent wellbeing in educational settings
- Psychedelic-assisted therapy frameworks
Fowler's publications demonstrate strong focus on health equity interventions, with recent work analyzing digital mental health program implementation, transgender healthcare models, and LGBTQIA+ perspectives in therapeutic settings. Research consistently addresses systemic barriers in healthcare access.

- UQ Ally Award (2022) for creating safer environments for LGBTQIA+ communities
He supervises postgraduate researchers and serves on multiple university committees including as co-chair of the SPH HDR Committee and UQ Ally Action Committee. Externally, Fowler contributes to Queensland Government's LGBTQIA+ advisory panel developing statewide strategy.
