معرفی
James Fotheringham is a Consultant Nephrologist and Honorary Professor of Renal Medicine at the University of Sheffield, affiliated with the School of Medicine and Population Health. His work bridges clinical practice at the Sheffield Kidney Institute with academic research at SCHARR, focusing on health economics of renal disease, data linkage, and patient-centered outcomes.
- PhD in secondary data analysis (2013, Kidney Research UK)
- Awarded NIHR Clinician Scientist Award for research on hemodialysis gaps
- Committee member at NICE (2021) and Vice Chair of Technology Assessment Committee A (2022)
His research interests span health-economic modeling (within and beyond trials), EQ5D mapping for quality-of-life assessment, instrumental variable analysis to reduce confounding, and discrete choice experiments to understand patient preferences. Recent work explores cost-utility models for hemodialysis scheduling, CKD-associated pruritus interventions, and insulin therapy outcomes in dialysis patients.
The 15 most recent articles (2023–2025) highlight his focus on home dialysis economics, symptom burden analysis, pruritus treatment, and hyperkalaemia in CKD. Trends include observational data linkage to improve dialysis care, methodological innovations in treatment adherence modeling, and systematic reviews of prescribing practices.
Scientific awards include the British Transplant Society National Junior Investigator Award and Renal Association Award for his early-career contributions to transplantation and dialysis research.
As a knowledge exchange specialist, he designs cost-utility models for healthcare technologies and collaborates on UK-wide dialysis studies (e.g., SHARE-HD, NightLife). He supervises PhD students and contributes to UK Renal Registry initiatives.
