James E. Penner-Hahn is the George A. Lindsay Professor of Chemistry and Biophysics at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on bioinorganic chemistry, particularly the roles of trace metals (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) in biological systems. He investigates metalloenzyme function, metal distribution in tissues using X-ray nanoprobe imaging, and ultrafast structural dynamics of photoactive metal sites via X-ray spectroscopy. His work leverages synchrotron radiation and techniques like X-ray absorption/emission spectroscopy, EPR, and NMR.
Education: Ph.D. from Stanford University. Awards include the Farrel Lytle Award (2003) and Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship. He advises graduate students (e.g., Diana Hilton, Jesse Ward) and undergraduates (e.g., Avery Chandler). His lab collaborates internationally at synchrotron facilities in the U.S., Japan, and France. Current projects include metallome mapping in yeast and inorganic physiology studies of metal ion distribution in biological systems.
