Dr. James E. Andrews is a Professor and Associate Director at the School of Information (iSchool), University of South Florida. He holds a PhD in Information Science from the University of Missouri–Columbia and has served as Director of the iSchool for 12 years. His research focuses on health informatics, clinical research standards, and information behavior in healthcare contexts, with funding from NIH, CDC, and AHRQ. Dr. Andrews is a Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association (FAMIA) and former Board member of ASIST. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and co-edited the seminal textbook Clinical Research Informatics.
Education: PhD in Information Science (University of Missouri–Columbia), Master’s in Library and Information Science (same institution). Military service: Honorably discharged US Navy Intelligence Analyst with the Navy Achievement Medal.
Research interests emphasize data standards for rare disease research, health communication strategies, and AI adoption in libraries. His work bridges clinical practice, patient education, and technological innovation in healthcare systems. Recent studies investigate disparities in cancer genetic testing utilization and information-seeking behaviors among underserved populations.
Awards include FAMIA fellowship and Navy Achievement Medal. Active in grant review panels and journal reviewing for health informatics. His 32+ publications span topics from SNOMED CT implementation to Twitter-based disease communication analysis.
