James E Egan is an Assistant Professor and Vice Chair for Practice Faculty in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. He focuses on improving health outcomes for LGBT populations, particularly through biobehavioral HIV prevention strategies and healthy aging research for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). Dr. Egan is actively involved in grant-funded research, including NIH and NIMH-supported studies, and accepts students/postdocs for Fall 2025 with tuition/stipend support via grant 5T32MH094174.
- 2014 PhD in Public Health from University of Pittsburgh
- 2004 MPH from Boston University School of Public Health
- 1996 BA in Cultural Anthropology & Women's Studies from University of Wisconsin-Madison
His research spans multiple subfields, including:
- Short-term episodic PrEP dosing protocols (R34 Epi-PrEP study)
- Game-based interventions to reduce bullying among sexual and gender minority youth (R21 study)
- Resilience factors in aging MSM populations (NIH/MACS collaboration)
- Harm reduction approaches to opioid overdose prevention through naloxone distribution programs
As a faculty member, Dr. Egan teaches advanced courses in behavioral health theories, regression modeling, and LGBT research methodologies, while co-facilitating the MPH LGBT Health Research Mentorship group.
