Matthew James Mimiaga is a Professor of Epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and a Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles. He serves as Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator on numerous NIH-funded research projects focused on HIV prevention, PrEP implementation, and LGBTQ+ health. Dr. Mimiaga is affiliated with the UCLA Center for LGBTQ+ Advocacy, Research & Health, where he leads critical work addressing health disparities among sexual and gender minorities.
Dr. Mimiaga's research interests span several interconnected domains in public health and epidemiology. His primary focus is on HIV prevention strategies, particularly Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) implementation among key populations including men who have sex with men, transgender women, and people who inject drugs. His work employs syndemic and intersectional frameworks to understand how multiple psychosocial health problems interact to increase HIV risk and affect treatment outcomes. Additional research areas include mental health disparities among LGBTQ+ populations, substance use interventions, and global health approaches to HIV care in countries like India, Brazil, and Peru.
The trends in Dr. Mimiaga's recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on addressing health disparities through multiple lenses. His work increasingly incorporates intersectional frameworks to examine how structural factors, stigma, and psychosocial health problems interact to affect HIV prevention and treatment outcomes. There's notable focus on transgender health, particularly regarding barriers to PrEP and ART adherence in diverse global contexts. His research also demonstrates growing attention to mental health aspects of HIV care, aging with HIV, and innovative intervention approaches including digital health solutions for medication adherence.
- Multiple NIH R01, R34, U01, and R21 grants as Principal or Co-Principal Investigator
- Extensive publications in leading journals including AIDS, Lancet, JAMA Network Open, and American Journal of Public Health
Dr. Mimiaga has secured significant research funding from the National Institutes of Health to investigate HIV prevention and treatment strategies. His current projects include efficacy trials of behavioral interventions to improve PrEP uptake and adherence, studies examining the impact of syndemic conditions on HIV outcomes, and global health research addressing HIV care gaps among transgender women in India and other resource-limited settings. His work often involves community-engaged research methodologies and collaboration with international partners.
Dr. Mimiaga is actively involved with the UCLA Center for LGBTQ+ Advocacy, Research & Health, where his team conducts research addressing critical health disparities affecting sexual and gender minority populations. His laboratory focuses on developing and testing innovative interventions to reduce HIV transmission and improve mental health outcomes among key populations, with particular attention to the intersections of stigma, substance use, and mental health.
