James Desborough is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Pharmacology at the University of East Anglia. He serves as Director of Learning and Teaching and Director of Employability, contributing to pharmacy education and professional development. His research focuses on medicines management for older adults, pharmacist consultation skills, and care home medication practices. He holds a PhD in Health Services Research from the University of East Anglia (2008) and an MPharm from the University of Bradford (2003).
Key research areas include medication adherence, clinical pharmacy practice, and pharmacist roles in healthcare settings. He leads projects like the Care Homes Independent Pharmacist Prescribing Service (CHIPPS) trial, exploring pharmacist prescriber effectiveness, and has developed training programs for pharmacist communication skills. He collaborates with organizations such as the National Institute for Health and Care Research and the UK Clinical Pharmacy Association.
His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to quality education and healthcare innovation. He advises multiple PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, with former advisees including Khaled Al-Motlaq and Michael Twigg. Current projects include advancing pharmacist consultation methodologies and evaluating lithium monitoring practices in mental health.
