James D. Campbell

Dr. James D. Campbell is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he has been a faculty member since 2001. He serves as Interim Division Head of Pediatric Infectious Disease and Tropical Pediatrics and Interim Director of the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD). He holds an MS in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (2006) and an MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (1991).

Dr. Campbell’s research focuses on vaccine development and clinical evaluation of vaccines against pathogens such as Neisseria meningitidis, Bacillus anthracis, SARS-CoV-2, and Haemophilus influenzae type b. His work spans phases of vaccine development, including trials in pregnant women, infants, and adults, with a strong emphasis on pediatric infectious diseases and global health initiatives in Uganda, Mali, and Ethiopia. He has contributed to HIV prevention research, including FDA-approved pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) strategies.

His recent publications highlight influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 vaccines in pediatric populations, with a focus on maternal immunization, serosurveys, and vaccine coverage. He has secured significant funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, NIH/NIAID, and private pharmaceutical companies for trials on Streptococcus pneumoniae, RSV, and anthrax vaccines.

He also contributes to policy through roles in the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Infectious Diseases (Red Book Committee) and the Institutional Review Board.
