James D. Brooks

James D. Brooks is the Keith and Jan Hurlbut Professor of Urology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He holds academic appointments in Urology, Bio-X Institute, Maternal & Child Health Research Institute, and Stanford Cancer Institute. His administrative roles include Director of the U54 Stanford O’Brien Urology Research Center and Vice Chair of the Department of Urology.

Dr. Brooks’ research focuses on biomarker discovery for urological diseases, particularly prostate and kidney cancers. His work spans genomic/proteomic methods, clinical trials for biomarker validation, and collaborations in molecular imaging. He leads initiatives like the Canary Prostate Active Surveillance Study (PASS) and has pioneered studies on prostate cancer aggressiveness classification using AI.

His clinical expertise includes urologic oncology, prostate cancer screening, and management of localized prostate cancer. He has authored over 430 publications and received prestigious awards including the Clinician Scientist Award from the Doris Duke Foundation and the Best Doctors in America recognition.

Dr. Brooks’ educational background includes an A.B. in Biology from the University of Chicago and an MD from Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed residencies at Johns Hopkins University and holds board certifications in Urology.
