James Cronin is a Research Professor in the Department of History at Boston College. His academic career focuses on British, European, comparative, and international history, with particular emphasis on the relationship between states, social structures, and the evolution of political orders. He is a local affiliate of Harvard University's Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, where he co-chairs the Seminar on Contemporary European Politics.
His research interests span modern British and European social/economic history, state-society dynamics since 1750, contemporary history, and comparative historical analysis. Recent work examines the fragility of liberal domestic and international orders in the post-Cold War neoliberal era. His publications address themes like Cold War political discourse, Anglo-American policy convergence, and the trajectory of left-wing political movements.
Cronin has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the German Marshall Fund, and holds fellowship status with the Royal Historical Society. His scholarly output includes monographs on topics ranging from New Labour's political legacy to the geopolitical aftermath of the Marshall Plan.
