James Coplin serves as a Visiting Instructor in the Department of History at Macalester College. He is currently completing his PhD at the University of Minnesota and previously held teaching positions at the University of Minnesota, St. Olaf College, Hamline University, and the University of St. Thomas.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science and History from Macalester College (1999)
- PhD candidate in History at the University of Minnesota (in progress)
Mr. Coplin's research centers on urban history and the lived experiences of Western foreign communities in nineteenth-century Canton, China (modern Guangzhou), particularly during the pre-Opium War era. His scholarly work examines intersections of environment, immigration patterns, imperial structures, information networks, and material culture within this historical context.
