Professor James Copestake specializes in international development at the University of Bath's Department of Social & Policy Sciences. His research examines intersections of poverty measurement, microfinance impact, agrarian change, and development finance. He directs the professional Doctorate in Policy Research and Practice at Bath's Institute for Policy Research and co-founded Bath Social and Development Research Ltd to advance qualitative impact evaluation.
Key projects include developing the Qualitative Impact Protocol (QuIP) for causal analysis in complex settings and leading research on rural livelihood transformations in Africa. His work addresses methodological challenges in evaluating development interventions, particularly regarding evidence synthesis and causal mapping.
