James Conolly is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Trent University. He holds degrees from the University of Toronto (B.A.), University of Southampton (MSc), and University College London (MA/PhD). His research integrates archaeology and geography, focusing on landscape archaeology, historical ecology, and geospatial methods. Current projects include the SSHRC-funded Kawartha Lakes Project (2016-2026), investigating long-term cultural and environmental changes in Ontario's Kawartha region through remote sensing, GIS, and field research.
Past work includes 20 years of Mediterranean fieldwork (Catalhoyuk, Kythera Island, Antikythera Survey Project) before shifting focus to the Great Lakes region. Key interests include ancestral First Nations' use of waterways, colonial ecological impacts, and lithic technologies. He supports seven graduate students in ceramic analysis, underwater landscapes, and ecological modeling.
Publications span archaeological methodological innovations, prehistoric settlement patterns, and interdisciplinary approaches to cultural landscapes. His research emphasizes integrating material culture studies with environmental data to understand human-environment interactions over millennia.
