James Collins is a Professor of Film, Television, and Theatre at the University of Notre Dame, concurrently serving as Professor of Film Studies. He holds the role of Department Chair overseeing areas in Art History, Design, and Studio Art. His research focuses on Film and Television Theory, Postmodern Studies, and Digital Culture. Collins has authored influential works such as Bring on the Books for Everybody (2011), Architecture of Excess (1995), and Uncommon Cultures (1989), and has edited volumes like High-Pop (2002). In 2010, he received the Charles Sheedy Award for Excellence in Teaching. His current project explores Playlist Culture, reflecting evolving digital media consumption patterns.
His academic contributions span over three decades, blending theoretical insights with analyses of cultural shifts in the information age. Collaborations include co-editing Film Theory Goes to the Movies (1993), demonstrating interdisciplinary engagement with cinematic discourse.
