Dr. James C. White is a Research Fellow in Water Sciences at the University of Birmingham's School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, affiliated with the Birmingham Institute for Sustainability and Climate Action. He holds a PhD in Freshwater Ecology and Hydrology from Loughborough University (2014-2018), an MSc in River Environments and Management from the University of Birmingham (2013-2014), and a BSc in Geography from the University of Southampton (2010-2013). His research focuses on freshwater ecosystem responses to environmental changes, emphasizing sustainable management solutions through 'big data' analytics, river temperature dynamics, citizen science, and multi-stressor impacts on standing water ecosystems.
He has held roles including Postgraduate Researcher at Swansea University (2018-2020) and River Restoration Scientific Officer at the River Restoration Centre (2020-2022). His teaching includes courses on Hydrogeomorphology, Water Science, and Catchment Management. White is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Ecology, founder of the Birmingham River Champions volunteer initiative, and a scientific advisor for the River Restoration Centre.
His research integrates applied and theoretical approaches, collaborating with non-academic partners like environmental regulators and water companies. Key themes include environmental flows, river restoration, and global dam impacts on riparian biodiversity. He actively promotes knowledge transfer through citizen science and community-based projects.
