James C. Ricker is a Lecturer in Museum Studies at the University of Oklahoma, Norman Campus. He holds an office in Bizzell Library and is affiliated with the School of Library and Information Studies. His career spans over three decades in public history, archaeology, and museum studies. Ricker has held roles as an Archaeological Field Technician, Archaeological Curator, and Curator of Collections at institutions including the Museum of the Great Plains and the Oklahoma Historical Society. Since 2001, he has also operated his own Cultural Resource Management (CRM) company, coordinating archaeological/historical surveys across Oklahoma. His work includes compliance with Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act, grant proposal writing, and museum collections management.
Ricker’s research interests focus on Museum Studies, Archaeology, and Historic Preservation, with a specialization in the American West and Cultural Astronomy/Archaeoastronomy. He teaches courses such as Historic Preservation, Federal Laws and Museums, Collections Management, and Exhibit Development.
Though not currently supervising doctoral or master’s students, Ricker has contributed extensively to professional practices in CRM and museum curation. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to cultural heritage preservation and public engagement.
