Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinaiمعرفی
James C. Iatridis, PhD is Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Leni and Peter W. May Department of Orthopaedics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. He also holds a Professor appointment in Neurosurgery and serves as Director of the Spine Research Program of the Mount Sinai Health System. Dr. Iatridis joined Mount Sinai in 2010 to advance his spine research in translational directions after spending nearly 15 years as faculty at the University of Vermont.
Dr. Iatridis' educational background includes a BA in Physics from Franklin and Marshall College, followed by BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University, with post-doctoral training at the University of Vermont. His academic journey reflects a strong foundation in both physics and engineering applied to biomedical problems.
His research focuses on Spine Mechanobiology, Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, with particular emphasis on functional changes in the spine in response to loading and injury. His laboratory investigates promising therapeutic techniques to promote spine health and repair through biomechanics, mechanobiology, tissue engineering, anti-inflammatory and cellular therapies. His work spans animal, cell, and organ culture studies with high relevance to human clinical conditions, balancing fundamental mechanisms with translational applications.
Analysis of Dr. Iatridis' recent publications reveals a strong research trajectory focused on intervertebral disc degeneration, repair mechanisms, and pain pathways. His work increasingly integrates molecular biology with biomechanics, examining TNF signaling pathways, cellular senescence, and inflammatory responses in disc tissue. Recent studies also demonstrate growing interest in advanced biomaterials for disc repair and validation of patient-reported outcomes using objective measures like fitness trackers.
- Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) 2008

Dr. Iatridis has received significant research funding from the NIH, Whitaker Foundation, and AO Foundation. He has served as inaugural Chair of the Spine Section of the Orthopaedic Research Society, President of the Orthopaedic Research Society, and as member and Chair of the NIH Skeletal Biology Structure and Regeneration Study Section. His leadership extends to editorial roles with multiple journals, and he has reviewed for over 20 journals and 6 funding agencies. The Iatridis Lab and Orthopaedic Research Lab represent active research groups focused on spine health and repair mechanisms.
