James Bolton is a Professor at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba, holding the Ruth Hurd Professorship. He serves as Director of Research for the Department of Psychiatry and is an Adjunct Scientist at the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy. Additionally, he is the Medical Director of Shared Health Manitoba Crisis Response Services and Health Sciences Centre Emergency Psychiatry.
- Education: MD (University of Western Ontario, 2001), Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (2006)
- Leadership: Co-chair of the Canadian Psychiatric Association’s Junior Researcher Colloquium (2016-2021), Board of Directors for the Canadian Association of Suicide Prevention (2008-2014), Manitoba Justice Adult Inquest Review Committee.
Dr. Bolton leads a research program in mental health epidemiology since 2006, focusing on suicide prevention, bereavement, pharmacoepidemiology, and population health. His work collaborates with national bodies like the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Mental Health Commission of Canada. He has supervised over 70 students at various levels but is not currently accepting graduate students.
Scientific awards include the Doctors Manitoba Health Promotion or Safety Award (2018), CIHR New Investigator status (2011-2016), and the NARSAD Young Investigator Award (2014). His research has been published in high-impact journals such as the British Medical Journal and JAMA Psychiatry.
