Dr. James Blackburn is a senior researcher affiliated with UNSW Sydney and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. As Head of the Garvan Genomics Platform, he oversees genomic sequencing, single-cell and spatial technologies, and flow cytometry services. With 23 years of expertise in genomics, transcriptomics, cancer genetics, and molecular genetics, he has developed two cancer diagnostics and a precision protocol for protein-DNA interaction analysis (ChIP-CapSeq).
- Education: PhD in Human Molecular Genetics from University of London (Imperial College), 2004; BSc (Hons) in Genetics from University of Manchester, 2000.
- Research Focus: Cancer diagnostics, fusion gene detection, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) applications.
- Grants: Multiple grants including MRFF Genomics Health Futures Mission Grant (2022-2027) and NHMRC Project Grants (2016-2020).
- Teaching: Provides lectures and exam questions for undergraduate students at UNSW.
