James Baker is an Associate Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO), a title granted in 2007, and previously served as Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Okanagan University College (OUC) after retiring in 2000. He holds an MA in Archaeology (1973) and has dedicated his career to teaching anthropology and archaeology at institutions including Langara Community College (1970–1974), Okanagan College, and OUC. Beyond academia, he has been the Mayor of Lake Country, BC since 2005.
His professional contributions extend to community development, including establishing the Carr’s Landing Fire Department, creating Coral Beach recreation area, and founding the Lake Country Heritage and Cultural Society. He remains active in local heritage initiatives through memberships in the Friends of Fintry Heritage Society and the Oceola Fish and Game Club.
