James Allard is an Associate Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Brock University's Faculty of Humanities. He also serves as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Student Affairs & Curriculum. Holding a PhD from the University of Waterloo (2002), Dr. Allard specializes in British Romantic Literature and Culture, with interdisciplinary interests in the History of Medicine (especially surgery), Body Studies, Gothic literature, and Speculative Fiction. His research examines intersections between literature and medicine, focusing on authority constructions around health, illness, and bodily experiences in the Romantic Century (1750-1850).
His research projects include investigations into patient narratives and the meaning of being a patient in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He has published widely on topics such as medical pedagogy in Romantic-era literature, trauma representation in British theater, and the intersections between medical discourse and literary forms.
