Dr. Gisèle M. Baxter is a Lecturer in the Department of English Language and Literatures at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She has held sessional teaching appointments since 1997, specializing in 19th-21st century literary and cultural studies, Gothic studies, and rhetoric and composition. Her research interests include speculative fiction, Modernism, and Victorian literature. Dr. Baxter has received prestigious awards such as the Ian Fairclough Teaching Prize (UBC, 2002–03 and 2019–20) and the SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship (1992–94).
Her academic contributions span editorial roles, including co-editing Blast, Corrupt, Dismantle, Erase: Contemporary North American Dystopian Literature (2014), and publishing chapters like "Bluebeard’s Women Fight Back" (2019). She has supervised numerous undergraduate Honours theses, focusing on Gothic tropes, posthumanism, and gender studies. Dr. Baxter has presented at conferences globally, exploring topics like synthetic humans in Gothic science fiction and the cultural legacy of Frankenstein.
Her teaching spans courses such as Speculative Fiction, Literature and Film, and Technical Writing. She has contributed to curriculum development, including designing UBC’s ENGL 243 (Science Fiction and Fantasy) and authoring blended learning modules. Her service includes roles on UBC’s Undergraduate Committee and Editorial Board for The Incredible Nineteenth Century.
Dr. Baxter’s work bridges literary analysis and contemporary cultural critique, emphasizing Gothic traditions, feminist perspectives, and the intersections of technology and narrative.
