Jakob Johan Demant is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Copenhagen, affiliated with the Department of Sociology within the Faculty of Social Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Copenhagen (2008) and has held academic positions at both Aarhus University and the University of Copenhagen since 2003. His research focuses on digital deviance, youth culture, and criminology, with emphasis on cryptomarkets, online interaction rituals, and alcohol/drug use dynamics.

- Research Expertise: Digital methods (web scraping, machine learning), cryptomarkets, youth crime, and prevention strategies.
Demant leads the Microsociology of Online Deviance Lab, investigating extreme online content sharing and platform-based crimes. He has secured €804k from DFF for a project on hateful online youth sociality (2022–present). His work bridges criminology, microsociology, and digital sociology, with over 120 peer-reviewed publications.
He teaches courses on culture, digital methods, and crime prevention, and has mentored 17 PhD students and postdocs. Awards include a 2023 Crown Princess Mary Center grant and a 2022 Teacher of the Year nomination.
