Jakki Cooney is a Professor at the University of Limerick, affiliated with the Bernal Institute and the Department of Biological Sciences. She is also associated with SSPC – the Research Ireland Centre for Pharmaceuticals. Her research focuses on proteases, Streptococcus pathogens, and protein structure analysis, contributing to understanding mechanisms of bacterial pathogenicity and immune evasion. She has published extensively, including studies on C5a peptidase crystal structures and gut microbiome analysis in inflammatory diseases.
Her work integrates structural biology, microbiology, and enzymology to explore how bacterial enzymes modulate host immune responses. Recent studies highlight collaborations on Streptococcus species proteases and their roles in disease progression. She has contributed to over 42 research outputs, with a focus on enzyme specificity, microbial pathogenesis, and structural insights into protein function.
Dr. Cooney’s research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being, particularly through her studies on infectious diseases and immune system modulation.
