Jake Fraser is an Associate Professor of German and Humanities at Reed College, Portland, Oregon. He holds a BA in Economics from UNC-Chapel Hill (2010) and a PhD in Germanic Studies from the University of Chicago (2018). His research explores late 18th- and early 20th-century German literature and philosophy, focusing on temporality, media history, and the interplay between science and culture.
Fraser is affiliated with Reed's Division of Literature and Languages and the German Department. He co-founded the Film and Media Studies program and teaches courses on German thought, media studies, and psychoanalysis. His current book project examines theories of 'retroactivity' from the 18th to 20th centuries. Future work includes studies on the 'Book of Nature' metaphor and media histories of latency.
His publications span peer-reviewed articles and translations, including works on Heinrich von Kleist, Kafka, and media theorist Friedrich Kittler. Awards include fellowships from the Fulbright Commission, DAAD, and Berlin Program. He has also translated Kittler's essays and contributed to journals like Germanic Review and CR: The New Centennial Review.
