Jaime Schultz is a Professor of Kinesiology in the Department of Kinesiology within the College of Health and Human Development at Pennsylvania State University. She serves as the Graduate Program Professor in Charge and Coordinator of the Sports Studies Minor. Schultz also holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and is affiliated with several research centers including the Center for the Study of Sports in Society.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Cultural Studies of Sport from the University of Iowa (2005)
- M.A. in Psychology of Sport from the University of Iowa (1999)
- B.A. in English & Spanish from Luther College (1996)
Schultz is dedicated to the critical and historical study of sport and physical activity, with research interests focusing on three broad areas: historical and contemporary issues in women's sport and physical activity; cultural kinesiology; and racial politics and cultural memory. Her work particularly examines sex, gender, and sexuality in women's sport, cultural and historical aspects of kinesiology, and the intersection of race and memory in sporting contexts. As a cultural kinesiologist, she applies humanities-based approaches to understand the complex relationships between sport, culture, and society through historical analysis and critical theory.
Her recent scholarly output demonstrates a strong focus on 21st century issues in sport, with particular attention to transgender inclusion policies, technological change in sport, the role of humanities in kinesiology, and women's sport history. Schultz's research combines historical analysis with contemporary cultural critique, often highlighting how past events shape current debates in sport. Her work bridges academic disciplines, connecting sport history with gender studies, cultural studies, and policy analysis.
Schultz has received numerous prestigious awards and honors throughout her career:
- Roberta J. Park Award for Scholarly Distinction (2024)
- Guy Lewis Award for Contribution to Sport History from the North American Society for Sport History (2023)
- Elected Fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology (2022)
- Evan G. and Helen G. Pattishall Outstanding Research Achievement Award (2021)

- Multiple Teaching Excellence Awards from the College of Health and Human Development (2012-2017)
- Best Article of the Year from the International Journal of the History of Sport (2010)
In addition to her research accomplishments, Schultz serves as an Affiliated Scholar with the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota and with Athlete Ally. She is also the co-editor (with Aram Goudsouzian) of the University of Illinois Press's Sport and Society series. Her service includes editorial board memberships for several prominent journals including Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal, Frontiers: The History, Culture and Sociology of Sports, and the Journal of Sport History. She maintains active research collaborations, including a recent visiting researcher position at Aarhus University in Denmark (2024) and a forthcoming Rock Ethics Institute Faculty Fellowship at Penn State (2025-2026). Her work contributes to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to gender equality and reduced inequalities.
