Jago Cooper is Director of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and Professor of Art and Archaeology at the University of East Anglia (UEA). He holds affiliations with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and ClimateUEA. His academic journey includes a PhD from UCL's Institute of Archaeology (2007), focusing on prehistoric Caribbean interactions. Cooper has held senior roles globally, including Head of the Americas at the British Museum and positions at City University of New York and University College London. His research bridges archaeology, climate change, and cultural heritage, emphasizing museums' role in fostering dialogue.
Research interests include climate change impacts on island societies, colonial encounters, and sociocultural dynamics. He leads projects like 'Many new worlds: A century of transformations in the post-Columbian Caribbean' funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Cooper also directs a Gatsby Foundation-funded initiative for museum exhibitions and core operations.
He has authored books and peer-reviewed articles, including works on Andean engineering and environmental justice. Cooper actively collaborates internationally, serving as a reviewer for journals and funding agencies. His current activities include advising on museum practices and contributing to interdisciplinary climate research.
