Jaffer Sheyholislami is a Professor at Carleton University's School of Linguistics and Language Studies (SLaLS). His research focuses on critical discourse studies and sociolinguistics, particularly Kurdish language dynamics, language policy, and identity formation. He has held academic roles since the 1990s, transitioning from radio broadcasting to academia via degrees at Fanshawe College and Carleton University.
Education includes a Library and Information Science diploma (Fanshawe, 1993), B.A. in General Linguistics with a TESL certificate (Carleton), and a PhD in Kurdish new media discourse (Carleton, completed with his 2011 Palgrave Macmillan monograph). His interdisciplinary work bridges systemic functional linguistics, media analysis, and policy critique.
Research interests emphasize Kurdish sociolinguistics, language rights, and media discourse. Notable contributions include the Oxford Handbook of Kurdish Linguistics (in prep) and over 30 peer-reviewed articles/chapters. He has supervised students globally and received awards for mentoring (2016 Faculty Award).
Teaching spans undergraduate courses (e.g., sociolinguistics, discourse analysis) and graduate seminars (language policy, critical discourse analysis). His work addresses multilingualism, minority language vitality, and the intersection of technology with identity politics.
