Dr. Alina Kamalova is a Lecturer in Russian at the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film, Queen Mary University of London. Her research examines discursive identity construction, language policies and ideologies, multilingualism, and media discourse through critical discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, memory studies, and visual culture frameworks.
Current projects explore how the war in Ukraine reshapes language ideologies and national identity in Kazakhstan. She has taught at Moscow State University, Nazarbayev University, the University of Edinburgh, and Suleyman Demirel University, designing modules on Discourse, Culture, and Communication, Russian Language and Culture, and Negotiating Identities.
Her recent publications focus on gender-based violence narratives in Russian media, English globalization in Kazakhstani coffee shops, and social media discourse during geopolitical crises. She actively presents at conferences like the Sociolinguistic Symposium and the International Conference on Sociolinguistics.
Kamalova holds a PhD in Russian and Sociolinguistics from the University of Edinburgh and is affiliated with the Linguistic Society of America and the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies.
