Hanna Torsh is a Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University and a member of the Language on the Move research team. She holds concurrent roles as Honorary Postdoctoral Fellow and Professional Casual staff member. Her research focuses on language in migration, multilingual families, family language policy, intercultural communication, and sociolinguistic dynamics in education and media.
Dr. Torsh completed her PhD in Linguistics at Macquarie University, examining linguistically intermarried couples and winning the 2019 Michael Clyne Award for work on immigrant bilingualism. Her 2020 monograph Linguistic Intermarriage in Australia: Between pride and shame (Palgrave Macmillan) explores how language intersects with gender and migration status in relationships.
Current projects include analyzing second-language speakers in reality TV collaborations with legal scholars, and investigating multilingual education equity. She contributes to public discourse through media commentary and @HannaTorsh Twitter engagement. Key research themes include heritage language maintenance, monolingual school barriers, and the role of digital tools in language policy.
Her work has been recognized with the 2024 Chitra Fernando Fellowship. She collaborates internationally, including a 2015-2025 visiting research stint at Hamburg University. Professional activities include keynote presentations on family language policy evolution and gender roles in bilingual parenting.
Dr. Torsh's research outputs span 24 peer-reviewed articles, books, and multimedia projects. Notable contributions include Chats in Linguistic Diversity digital series and chapters in the Routledge International Handbook of Equity and Inclusion in Education. Her work bridges sociolinguistics with education policy, media analysis, and migration studies.
