Dr. Jacqui Gingras is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at Toronto Metropolitan University. She holds a BSc from the University of British Columbia, an MSc from the University of Alberta, and a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Education. Her research focuses on social health movements, fat studies, critical pedagogies, and decolonization within healthcare and education systems. She is the founding editor of the Journal of Critical Dietetics, an open-access journal advancing critical perspectives in nutrition science.
Dr. Gingras' work examines intersections of colonial neoliberal economics, intersectional feminisms, and health activism. Her expertise includes healthism critiques, weight stigma, and the sociology of healthcare professions. She teaches courses on health and society, sociology of education, and food studies. She is affiliated with the Communication & Culture graduate program and has published in Journal of Sociology, Critical Public Health, and Fat Studies Journal. Currently on leave during Winter 2025, her academic contributions bridge theory and praxis through autoethnographic and collaborative methodologies.
Her editorial work and research emphasize transformative education and healthcare systems, prioritizing marginalized voices in health equity advocacy. She actively critiques professional gatekeeping in dietetics and promotes inclusive pedagogical frameworks.
