Jacques Du Toit

Jacques Du Toit is an Associate Professor at the Department of Town and Regional Planning, University of Pretoria, South Africa. He holds a bachelor’s (cum laude), master’s (cum laude), and PhD in Social Science Methods from the University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University, respectively. His research focuses on improving methodological rigor in built environment research, particularly in urban sustainability and people-environment interactions. He explores how urban planning and design can enhance human well-being and pro-environmental behaviors through interdisciplinary approaches.

His publications emphasize methodological coherence in housing research, climate adaptation policies, and sustainable infrastructure. Notable works include studies on stormwater management in residential areas and the role of GPS data in qualitative urban research. Dr. Du Toit is a C3-rated researcher by the South African National Research Foundation and serves on multiple ethics committees, including the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology.

Prior to his current role, he served as Chief Researcher at the Human Sciences Research Council. He is a Professional Planner (South African Council for Planners) and actively contributes to the UKSEA African Urban Planning Research Network.
