Jacqueline Elam is an Assistant Professor in the Core Program at Occidental College, appointed in 2019. She holds a B.A. from U.C.S.B., an M.A. from Loyola Marymount University, and a Ph.D. from The Claremont Graduate School. Her research focuses on death studies, critical theory, genre studies (particularly horror and sci-fi), film noir, 19th- and 20th-century British literature, Los Angeles, and the work of Slavoj Žižek. She co-authored a scholarly book exploring the intersection of aesthetics and death care practices. Prior to joining Oxy, she served for ten years in the Office of the Provost at CalArts, including as Acting Provost, and taught at Scripps College. Her office is located in Library 319, with weekly Zoom availability on Mondays 10-11am and Wednesdays 2:15-4pm.
Elam’s interdisciplinary approach bridges literary studies, cultural analysis, and contemporary social practices. Her work on death care integrates aesthetic theory with practical ethics, reflecting her broader engagement with existential themes in literature and film. She actively connects academic rigor with institutional leadership, as demonstrated by her roles in provostial administration and her contributions to undergraduate education through the Core Program.
