Jacob Meyjes-Brown is a PhD Candidate at the Genomics Research Centre (GRC) within Queensland University of Technology’s (QUT) Faculty of Health. His research focuses on the functional genetics of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and its component traits using the Norfolk Island Health Study (NIHS) and validation in the UK Biobank. Prior to his PhD, he completed a Master of Philosophy at GRC, building on his dual bachelor’s degrees in Molecular Genetics and Journalism from the University of Queensland (UQ, 2017). Jacob transitioned from careers in culinary arts and music to academia, joining GRC as a volunteer in 2020 before advancing his research career.
Education:
- Bachelor of Science (Molecular Genetics), University of Queensland, 2017
- Bachelor of Journalism, University of Queensland, 2017
His research interests emphasize uncovering genetic aetiologies of chronic diseases, particularly leveraging isolated populations like Norfolk Island for enhanced genetic mapping. This work aims to inform preventive strategies and personalized therapies for MetS, a global health crisis driven by environmental and genetic factors. Jacob collaborates with leading researchers including Distinguished Professor Lyn Griffiths, Associate Professor Rod Lea, and Dr. Heidi Sutherland.
Lab/Affiliations: Jacob is embedded within the Genomics Research Centre, a multidisciplinary hub advancing clinical, computational, and functional genomic studies. His project aligns with the Centre’s domains of Personalised Therapies and Chronic Disease Genomics.
