Jacob Mackey is an Associate Professor at Occidental University, specializing in Comparative Studies in Literature and Culture. His work bridges Classics with Cognitive Science, focusing on ancient Roman culture, religion, and childhood.

Jacob's research explores how cognitive theories can explain ancient Roman practices, such as ritual orthopraxy, belief systems, and childhood agency. His recent work includes critiques of cultural evolution and analyses of classical texts through cognitive frameworks.
Jacob's 15 most recent publications highlight trends in Classics-Cognitive Science intersections, including studies on ritual behavior, developmental psychology in antiquity, and cultural transmission in literary and religious contexts. His 2022 book Belief and Cult: From Intuitions to Institutions in Roman Religion (Princeton University Press) is a seminal contribution to the field.
