Jacob Hochard is the Knobloch Associate Professor of Conservation Economics at the University of Wyoming’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Wyoming (2015) and dual BAs in Economics and Environmental Studies from Gettysburg College (2011). His research focuses on integrating geospatial analysis, mathematical modeling, and empirical methods to study interactions between natural and human systems, with a focus on natural resource policy, biodiversity conservation, and disaster risk management.
Prof. Hochard’s work spans coastal resilience (e.g., mangrove protection), climate solutions, and public health impacts of environmental hazards. Notable projects include assessing hurricane impacts on vulnerable populations, valuing wildlife populations for natural wealth accounts, and developing tools to predict drinking water contamination risks. He has collaborated with institutions like the U.S. EPA, IPBES, and The Nature Conservancy on initiatives such as the SHOW WYO conservation initiative and the STAR project predicting well contamination risks.
His interdisciplinary grants include a $799,952 EPA STAR grant for predicting contamination risks in private wells and a Knobloch Family Foundation award for Wyoming’s natural wealth accounts. Hochard also co-leads a postdoctoral research program in environment and natural resource economics, emphasizing wildlife modeling and ecosystem services.
