Jacob Hileman is an Assistant Professor of Sustainability at West Virginia University (WVU). He holds an interdisciplinary background in natural and social sciences, with professional experience bridging science, policy, and practice. Prior to joining WVU in 2023, he worked at the Stockholm Resilience Centre and Uppsala University in Sweden. His current research focuses on just energy transitions, environmental justice, and climate adaptation through collaborative projects with Appalachian community organizations.
His research interests include the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainability challenges, with emphasis on climate change, disaster governance, and multi-level environmental governance systems. He employs network analysis, institutional frameworks, and action-research methodologies to address complex socio-ecological systems.
Recent work includes grant applications for projects supporting just energy transitions and a focus on bridging governance gaps in climate adaptation strategies. His publications span high-impact journals like Nature Communications and Energy Policy, with topics ranging from disaster adaptation to sustainable supply chains.
