Klaus Hans Jacob is a Doherty Senior Scholar and Special Research Scientist in the Seismology, Geology and Tectonophysics division at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) of Columbia University. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at LDEO, contributing to academic programs in earth sciences and disaster resilience.
His educational background includes:
- BS in Mathematics and Physics from the Technical University of Darmstadt
- MS in Geophysics from Gutenberg University Mainz
- PhD in Geophysics/Seismology from Goethe University, Frankfurt / Main
Dr. Jacob's research focuses on disaster risk management, sustainable adaptation to climate change and sea level rise, and the resilience of coastal mega-cities to flooding. He also investigates seismic and volcanic hazards, the resilience of transportation and communication infrastructure to natural hazards, and disaster-resilient urban planning and land use. His work is critical for developing strategies to protect vulnerable coastal communities and infrastructure.
His notable award includes:
- Hero of the NYC Harbor, Waterfront Alliance (NY/NJ), 2013
As a researcher at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Dr. Jacob is part of a leading institution in earth sciences, contributing to global understanding of natural hazards and climate adaptation. His work often involves interdisciplinary collaboration to address complex challenges in urban resilience.
