Anne Bécel

Anne Bécel serves as a Lamont Associate Research Professor at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, NY. Her academic career spans institutions across France, Spain, and the United States, with her current position representing the culmination of extensive research in geophysical sciences.

Dr. Bécel's research interests encompass Geophysics, Marine Geophysics, Marine Seismology, Solid Earth Geophysics, and Tectonophysics. Her work specifically focuses on characterizing the seismic structure of the Earth's crust and uppermost mantle to better understand underlying tectonic and magmatic processes. She has conducted significant research on active plate boundaries including transform faults and subduction zones, as well as rifted passive margins and ocean basin settings.

Her current research at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory primarily investigates the Alaska Peninsula and Hellenic subduction zones with particular emphasis on assessing seismic risks such as large earthquakes and associated tsunamis. She has also contributed important research on the development of the Eastern North American passive margin.

Dr. Bécel's educational journey began with a B.S. in Physics-Geophysics from the University of Rennes I in France, followed by M.S. and PhD degrees in Geophysics from the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP), with her doctorate completed in 2006. She further developed her expertise through postdoctoral research at the CSIC-'Jaume Almera' Institute in Barcelona, Spain, and at the Collège de France in Aix-en-Provence, France.

As an active researcher in Earth sciences, Dr. Bécel contributes to our understanding of geological processes that have direct implications for hazard assessment and mitigation in seismically active regions around the world.
