Jacob Burgess is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Science. He leads the Ultrafast Microscopy and Magnetism Research Group, focusing on spin and carrier dynamics in magnetic thin films, nanomagnetic elements, and correlated electron systems using time-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy and THz spectroscopy.
- PhD in Condensed Matter Physics, University of Alberta (2013)
- MSc in Condensed Matter Physics, University of Alberta (2007)
- BSc in Physics Honours, University of Victoria (2006)
His research explores Kondo impurities, spin chains, and quantum entanglement, with methodologies spanning scanning tunnelling microscopy, magneto-optical magnetometry, and ultrafast dynamics. Publications highlight his work on antiferromagnetically coupled atomic systems and quantum state manipulation.
Scientific awards include
- Humboldt Fellowship (2014–2017)
- NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (2014–2016)
- University of Alberta Faculty of Science Dissertation Award (2013)
- Alberta Ingenuity Nanotechnology Scholarship (2007–2011)
- NSERC Doctoral Graduate Scholarship (2008–2010)
The Ultrafast Microscopy and Magnetism Research Group, under his leadership, investigates nanostructures and quantum technologies, offering opportunities for MSc, PhD, and postdoctoral fellows.
