Erik Wahlström is a Professor and Head of the Department of Physics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). His research focuses on nanoscale charge transport, magnetodynamics of low-dimensional systems, and magnetic nanoparticle characterization. He leads investigations into antiferromagnets, magnonic structures, and instrument development for advanced spectroscopy techniques like ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and pulsed inductive microwave magnetometry (PIMM). His work integrates experimental methods such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES).
Education: Doctor of Technology in condensed matter physics from Chalmers University of Technology (2000). Key research areas include quantum interference effects in graphite, magnetic thin films, and self-assembly of magnetic nanostructures. Notable contributions include studies on La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures and magnonic crystals. Instrumentation expertise includes custom-built ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) STM systems and broadband FMR setups.
Publications span over two decades, with recent work on spin wave propagation in Heusler alloys, mechanical stability of magnetic superstructures, and epitaxial bismuth film growth. Research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches combining material synthesis, advanced characterization, and theoretical modeling of magnetic phenomena.
