Dr. Jack Whitehouse is a Research Fellow in Equine Microbiology at the University of Surrey, affiliated with the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, and the Institute for Sustainability. He holds a PhD in Veterinary Medicine and Science (2024) from the University of Surrey, following a MRes in Molecular and Cellular Biology (2020) from the University of Birmingham and a BSc in Human Biosciences (2018) from the University of Northampton.
His research focuses on bacterial pathogenesis, particularly the mechanisms of diseases like Canine Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy (Alabama Rot), and the role of the gut microbiome in improving equine and human-animal welfare. He also investigates next-generation probiotics for equine health. Jack has held roles such as Scientific Project Manager for the One Health European Joint Project and chairs the Postgraduate Engagement Forum of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. He contributes to teaching at the foundation and master’s levels via his PGCert in Higher Education.
Jack actively participates in academic governance, serving as a Postgraduate Research (PGR) representative on multiple university committees, including the Research & Innovation Committee and the School of Veterinary Medicine Research Culture Committee. His work integrates One Health principles, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration.
