Chris Proudman is a Professor of Veterinary Clinical Science and Head of the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Surrey. He holds a PhD in Equine Epidemiology from the University of Liverpool (1996) and graduated from Cambridge University Vet School (1988). His academic career spans teaching, leadership, and research in equine medicine. He leads the development of the University of Surrey's veterinary curriculum and focuses on equine gastrointestinal health, particularly the role of the gut microbiome in disease.
Education: MA (1986), VetMB (1988) from University of Cambridge; Cert EO (1994), RCVS Diploma (1995) in Equine Gastroenterology; PhD (1996) from University of Liverpool.
Research interests include equine intestinal microbiome, early-life microbial impacts on health and performance, and interventions to enhance animal welfare. He collaborates on projects like the Alborada Well Foal Study and Next Generation Probiotics. His industry links include the Horserace Betting Levy Board Veterinary Advisory Committee and Aintree Racecourse.
Awards: Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (FRCVS). He has secured grants including a €2.5M European initiative for animal health.
Notable contributions include pioneering studies on equine grass sickness and vaccine feasibility, and advancing understanding of antibiotic effects on foals' microbiome and performance.
